Expanding Horizons: Best Practices for Social Work Practicums in Non-Traditional Settings

Social work practicums in non-traditional settings allow students to engage in community-based learning that centers our profession’s core values of equity and inclusion. To learn how programs are implementing these placements, we surveyed practicum education directors to gather valuable insights on best practices for successful practicums in non-traditional placement settings.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Define non-traditional practicum settings and their important role in social work education.
  2. Explore how non-traditional placements contribute to equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practices, including opportunities for students to engage in disability justice work.
  3. Identify key elements for successful practicum experiences, including supervision models, student and agency characteristics, and funding.
