Music generates mechanisms that activate each portion of the brain. Its ability to rewire the brain by strengthening synapses and forming new ones gives it medicinal properties. Research shows that music can improve cognitive development and auditory processing. As the universal language, music creates individual experiences where joy is found.

Upon completion, the participant will be able to understand how music can impact the well-being and experiences of joy for incarcerated African American Men.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to explore various ways in which expressive arts can facilitate disability joy among carceral communities.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to discuss strategies for incorporating music and other expressive arts in their practice/future practice work in carceral communities.
