Dr. Izumi Sakamoto is an Associate Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work (FIFSW) and an Academic Fellow with the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research at the University of Toronto. A former Fulbright Scholar with degrees from both Japan (Sophia University) and the USA (University of Michigan), Dr. Sakamoto’s research and advocacy work has focused on the employment discrimination faced by skilled immigrants, experience of racism and cultural identities by Asian Canadians, cultural activism and community building by Japanese Canadians, and anti-oppressive practice. As an international student in the US, Dr. Sakamoto was a vocal advocate for international students and their families, and later, as a faculty member at FIFSW, she became the inaugural International Student Coordinator. She teaches classes for both MSW and Ph.D. students on qualitative research (including arts-based research), empowerment, social work practice with immigrants and refugees, and social work practice with organizations and communities.
