David L. Bringhurst, Ph.D., MSW, (USAF, L.C.S.W., & BCD retired), is an Associate Teaching Professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work where he teaches practice courses, including military social work. Prior to joining the academic community Dr. Bringhurst spent 21 years as an active duty military social worker holding multiple positions, including, Chief of ANG Behavioral Health Branch, Air National Guard Suicide Prevention Program Manager, Chief of Air Force Family Research, and Chief of the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program. His research interests focus on the unique needs of military service members and their families. He published a chapter in the Social workers’ desk reference on clinical practice with military families. Recent activity includes serving as co-chair for the Council on Social Work Education’s Competency 6 Task Force for updating their practice standards in the Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Military Social Work. During his time leading the Air Force Wounded Warrior program he learned to appreciate the challenges faced by those with disabilities, particularly those with traumatic brain injuries and post trauma stress. This interest has continued with teaching student veterans in the school’s military social work track.
