Associate Clinical Professor and the Director of Field Education

Katharina Werner, LCSW, MSW, is an Associate Clinical Professor and the Director of Field Education at the University of Montana School of Social Work. Professor Werner has significant expertise working with individuals affected by trauma, homelessness, domestic and sexual violence, commercial sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. With a background in direct service and program management, she developed a strong passion for social policy and civic engagement and has contributed to the National Social Work Voter Mobilization Campaign, which integrates nonpartisan voter registration and engagement into social work education. Professor Werner currently serves on the board of the North American Network of Field Educators and Directors (NANFED) and co-chairs the Northwest Field Education Consortium, facilitating networking and support for field education faculty. In addition to her U.S.-based work, Professor Werner, an immigrant herself, has addressed global social justice issues in Germany, India, and Southeast Asia. In 2023, she designed and led a successful study abroad course in Berlin, Germany, examining the differences in German and American approaches to refugee resettlement policies and services. Professor Werner joined the University of Montana in 2016 as an adjunct instructor, later becoming Assistant Director of Field Education and then Director in 2019, a role she values for its impact on shaping future social workers.
