Access Granted: Unlocking Inclusive Social Work Practicums

This presentation explores how the traditional in-person practicum learning context can present unique challenges for students with disabilities and how the exploration of non-traditional placements and approaches can contribute to more successful outcomes. Flexible, virtual, and employment-based practicums will be examined as viable alternatives to the traditional in-person practicum setting.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Identify key barriers social work students with disabilities face in traditional practicum settings.
  2. Discuss benefits and potential challenges of in-person practicum settings and approaches that allow for more creative and flexible engagement with students such as employment-based, hybrid, or virtual practicum sites.
  3. Explore how practicum education programs can expand their approved placement settings while still meeting social work competencies.
