Tural Mammadli, MSW, LMSW is a doctoral candidate in the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Social Work who will defend his dissertation by May 2026. Tural’s scholarship examines the role of socio-structural factors and minority stressors in behavioral health outcomes and healthcare engagement among minoritized communities. Within this framework, Tural is particularly interested in the unique substance use and mental health vulnerabilities experienced by transgender and nonconforming (TGNC) persons, the broader lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) community as well as immigrants and refugees. His work to date has led to the publication of 18 peer-reviewed articles (seven as first author) in highly regarded interdisciplinary journals, including Social Science and Medicine, the International Journal of Transgender Health, and Sexuality Research and Social Policy.
Tural has taught and co-taught undergraduate and graduate courses at several institutions including in hybrid, in-person, and online formats. He has also mentored students independently and through research teams. His combined achievements in scholarship and mentorship were recognized at the university level as University of Maryland Baltimore’s Student of the Year in 2023.
