The Marginalization of Self-Care: Disparities by Dis/ability, Social Identity, and Social/Relational Insecurity

Research with licensed social workers from a Midwestern state found disparate outcomes in professional self-care for individuals that reported a disability, identified as LGBTQIA+, or had a social/relational insecurity. Findings suggest self-care models that place the onus of professional self-care solely on individuals may be short-sighted and unjust.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Recognize gaps in the current literature regarding accessibility of professional self-care in social work practice.
  2. Describe the ways that social workers that identify as having a disability, LGBTQIA+, or having social/relational insecurities, may experience disparities in professional self-care efforts in the practice environment.
  3. Discuss ways to enhance the explicit curriculum on social work self-care to include a social justice lens.
