Pre-Conference: Field Education Institute: Workplace Access by Universal Design: Moving Beyond Accommodations in Field Education

Disability inclusion in field education primarily relies on accommodations mediated by academic institutions, reinforcing a deficit-based model that frames disability as an individual obstacle rather than a systemic design issue. We propose a Universal Design approach to field supervision, re-imagining inclusion beyond accommodations through a co-creative, interdependent model of care.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Describe how traditional field supervision models rely on individualized accommodations and reinforce disclosure-based accessibility rather than embedding systemic inclusion.
  2. Apply Universal Design, disability justice, and mutual aid principles to develop co-creative, accessible supervision practices in field education
  3. Evaluate how co-creative, disability justice-aligned field supervision can reshape workforce inclusion strategies beyond social work education.
