This paper examines how involvement in community corrections affects the mental health of Black women, emphasizing differences by age. Using an ecological systems framework, we argue that the structural violence of the criminal legal system may not only exacerbate existing disabilities but also creates new ones, particularly affecting mental health.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
Analyze how community corrections function as a system that exacerbates or creates disabilities, particularly for Black women.
Compare how younger and older Black women in community corrections experience mental health deterioration and disability.
Develop strategies to incorporate age-sensitive, disability justice-informed principles into social work curricula and intervention models.
