Dr. Karen A. Johnson is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama’s School of Social Work and a Visiting Scholar at Yale University. She was recognized as a 2023 Boston Congress of Public Health “Health Innovator to Watch” and received the 2024 “Early Career Faculty Service and Leadership in Social Work Education Award” from the Council on Social Work Education. With a Ph.D. from Columbia University and postdoctoral training at both Columbia and Johns Hopkins, Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on HIV-related behaviors among women in the criminal legal system, with an emphasis on sexual health and evidence-based interventions. She brings over twenty years of direct practice experience to her work and has led or co-led multiple NIH-funded studies aimed at improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations, particularly women in community corrections and those with high levels of susceptibility to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
