Session: Transformative care, empowering adults with disabilities and disability justice

Empowering direct support professionals bringing joy to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This presentation will discover how empowering direct support professionals (DSPs) using a general systems theory approach, will increase joy and promote disability justice for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) living in residential settings.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Upon completion participants will identify joy as a sense of happiness, peace, and well-being, for adults with I/DD living in residential settings.
  2. Upon completion, participants will learn how empowering DSPs through systems theory framework in residential settings can cultivate open systems and impact joy, increase quality of life, and foster disability justice.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to utilize and develop a framework across social work education and practice, to reignite joy for adults with I/DD and DSPs, which enriches social justice, and supports human rights by increasing joyful interactions.
