Exploring Perceptions of Diverse BSW Students’ Pursuit of an MSW

Bachelor of Social Work students, from an HSI, urban university reported their motivators and barriers to pursuing a Master of Social Work degree. The findings suggest that students are highly motivated to serve their communities and secure independence but face significant barriers around cost, family obligations, and belongingness.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Participants will increase knowledge about motivators and barriers for diverse BSW students' pursuit of MSW studies.
  2. Participants will evaluate practices in their respective MSW programs as it relates to motivators and barriers for BSW students.
  3. Participants will develop strategies for reducing barriers that make pursuing an MSW degree more accessible for students across diverse backgrounds.
