Forensic Social Work: Promoting Disability Justice and Humanity Through Inclusive & Liberatory Practices

This panel explores the critical role of disability justice in forensic social work, highlighting the need for inclusive, liberatory practices. Panelists from diverse forensic settings will explore skill development, interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical challenges, and preparing social workers for transformative careers at the intersection of social work and the legal system.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Analyze the Intersection of Disability Justice and Forensic Social Work – Identify how ableism and carceral systems intersect in forensic settings and explore ways social workers can champion disability justice, accessibility, and self-determination for system-impacted individuals.
  2. Develop Competencies for Inclusive and Human-Centered Forensic Social Work – Examine key skills such as trauma-informed advocacy, crisis intervention, policy reform, and restorative justice that are essential for supporting individuals with disabilities in forensic settings.
  3. Expand Forensic Social Work Education and Training Pathways – Explore strategies for integrating disability justice principles into forensic social work curricula, practicum placements, and continuing education to better prepare the next generation of forensic social workers.
