Interprofessional Education Event: Weight Bias and Stigma in Healthcare

Patients who experience weight stigma in healthcare settings have poorer health and may avoid future care. Stigma and lack of awareness happen at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Interprofessional activity among 12 healthcare programs
examined existing biases and solutions to weight-inclusive care while promoting advocacy for equity and inclusion.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Provide an example of interprofessional education experience as a crucial tool for improving patient services in a collaborative teamwork in healthcare settings
  2. Elaborate on possible attitudes and biases affecting health, mental health, and initial barriers for patients experiencing weight stigma and its effect on future healthcare outcomes
  3. Understand the implications of providers’ weight bias in healthcare settings and the need of recognizing their challenges while examine the various levels of which stigma occurs and develop appropriate interventions while calling for change
