Breaking the Chains: Understanding the Damaging Effects of Institutional Betrayal in Social Work

This pilot study investigates the challenges faced by social workers in implementing antiracist practices within their organizations. As social workers strive to combat racial injustices, they often grapple with significant power dynamics that create tension between advocating for change and a domineering environment.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. By engaging in this session, participants will: Develop an understanding of the challenges faced by social workers implementing anti-racist practices within their organizations through the lens of critical consciousness.
  2. Learn about key barriers at the institutional, structural, and cultural levels that influence adverse experiences for licensed social workers.
  3. Explore how inadequate training and education on service delivery to BIPOC clients affect social workers’ ability to navigate and challenge systemic racism within their professional settings.
