Caregivers Trained to Deliver Life Reviews Improve Depression in Persons Living with Dementia

We trained 45 family caregivers of persons with depression and dementia (PwDD) a life review intervention virtually/online and reported its results. PwDD’s depression significantly improved and post-intervention interviews supported the quantitative findings. This study demonstrates life review as a successful non-pharmacological intervention that social workers can practice with PwDD.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Describe the Caregiver-Provided Life Review (C-PLR) intervention and how it can be an alternative to accessing traditional life review therapy in a clinical setting.
  2. Describe the primary and secondary outcomes of the C-PLR intervention and how it benefits the family caregivers, persons with depression and dementia (PwDD), and their relationship as a whole.
  3. Discuss how social workers may be able to implement C-PLR with their own clients caring for a PwDD.
