“Beyond the Return” Portal of Power: Exploring otherness, culture, and disability through global learning

This panel discussion explores a HBCU social work education culture immersion/service-learning trip to Ghana and the intersectional impact of Afro-pessimism and Black identity development using a disability justice framework in cross cultural context. Insights will be provided about the broader academic and emotional significance of Ghana’s Point of No Return.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Define the intersectionality of Afro-pessimism, disability, and identity contextually reflected in the traveled abroad experiences.
  2. Define “community” engaged service learning how social work students of Color culturally and how it influences identity and disability justice.
  3. Report how students and faculty of Color who study abroad cultural identity and lived experiences influence their perceptions of disability justice.
