This is an exploratory study of frontline and non-frontline workers to understand ‘Transnational Marriage Abandonment’, a form of abuse against South Asian women in the UK within the context of gender dynamics, migration, and human rights to inform future efforts to strengthen practice, policy, training, and research capacity.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
To help attendees better understand the role of both frontline (social workers, advocates, and counselors) and non-frontline (outreach coordinators and policy advocates) workers in meeting the needs of immigrant South Asian victims/survivors of ‘transnational marriage abandonment’ (TMA), a form of domestic abuse living in the UK.
To help attendees understand the significance of gender-based violence, migration policies, legal protection, and cultural nuances related to addressing transnational marriage abandonment besides identifying cultural, social, professional, and other challenges/barriers to South Asian community organizations’ ability to respond to TMA.
To provide recommendations for impacting those challenges/barriers and improving research, policy, training and service capacity for TMA victims and survivors.
