Wonjen C. Bagley is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. Her research focuses on teaching at MSIs (Minority Serving Institutions), seeking to provide new information on teaching social justice in social work by examining curricula at MSIs. Her career has focused on understanding social inequalities, mechanisms that produce and perpetuate them, and how to dismantle them. Additionally, she focuses on preparing students to address social disparities in social work practice.
Wonjen Bagley has over 30 years of experience serving diverse populations in substance abuse and mental health treatment, government, schools, and nonprofits. Passionate about quality education for all, in 2015, she co-founded Bridge Scholars of Chattanooga, an organization focused on preparing under-resourced youth for academic success. The flagship program, a five-week tuition-free educational enrichment summer experience, aimed to put middle-grade males on a college track. Presently, Bridge Scholars provides college scholarships designed to encourage and support outstanding former program scholars who have worked hard and have financial needs.
Dr. Bagley teaches various undergraduate and graduate courses, including human diversity, human behavior and the social environment, advanced family therapy, and social work history. She serves as an independent Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultant and trainer. She obtained her BSW from the University of South Florida, her MSW from Florida State University, and her Doctor of Social Work from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
