Universidad Ana G. Méndez
has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Communication (1996) from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master degree in Investigative Journalism (1997) from Florida International University. After 12 years working as journalist and several years as part-time professor, Betancourt Díaz decided to study a Doctoral degree in Social Policy (2014) from Beatriz Lassalle School of Social Work at the University of Puerto Rico, and a Master degree in Social Work (direct services) from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico (2017). As a graduate student, she worked for five years as a research assistant in several studies about social stigma and VIH. After finished the Ph.D., she worked for three years as researcher and coordinator for the National Institutes of Health granted project Cuídalos, a study about sexual communication among Latino parents and their adolescents. As social worker, she has experience working for the Drug Court Program, part of the Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration, and also working with the Red Cross, Puerto Rico Chapter. Betancourt has published scholarly papers and has presented in national and international professional conferences on theme such as: VIH stigma, social workers and their participation in the media, sexual communication between parents and their adolescents, and gender-based violence, revictimization and the media. She is, also, member of the Permanent Legislation Commission of the Colegio de Profesionales del Trabajo Social de Puerto Rico. Betancourt Díaz is assistant professor and department chair at Universidad Ana G. Méndez Carolina Campus.
