Dr. Alison Wetmur is a passionate advocate for disability justice and a scholar of the intersection of disability and social work. Born deaf to hearing parents, Alison faced unique challenges throughout her early life, particularly in communication and self-identity. It was only at the age of 23 that she learned American Sign Language (ASL). This transformative experience allowed her to connect with the Deaf community and fully express her identity as a DeafDisabled individual.
Her research interests reflect her commitment to addressing critical issues within the disability community. She focuses on disability justice, the nuances of deafness, the implications of language deprivation, and the lasting effects of trauma. Dr. Wetmur is currently a faculty member at the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky, where she shares her expertise and personal insights with students, inspiring them to advocate for marginalized populations.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Wetmur is a founding member of the Social Work Disability Justice League. This initiative hosts annual online “unconferences” that create a platform for disabled social workers and their allies to convene, share experiences, and collaborate on strategies for advancing disability rights within the profession. Through her dedication to research, education, and community building, Dr. Wetmur continues to make significant contributions to the field of social work, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
