Assistant Professor
New York University
Ana T. Flores is an Assistant Professor at NYU Silver School of Social Work. Her scholarship is focused on advancing culturally responsive services for Latines and other marginalized communities living with what is often termed “serious mental illness.” Her work aims to identify strategies for addressing cultural and structural barriers to quality care. Informed by her own experiences working with diverse individuals and families living with serious mental illness, Dr. Flores’ long-term goals are to (1) contribute to an understanding of the needs and experiences of individuals living with “serious mental illness”; (2) inform intervention research with the expertise of service users and their families and communities; and (3) to develop equitable community implementation plans that support increased engagement, acceptability, and relevance of mental health treatment for marginalized communities. Ana teaches Social Work Practice Research and Implementation of Evidence-based Practices, challenging students to critically evaluate epistemological oppression, incorporate reflexivity and community participation in their work, and expand their understanding of “ethical” research and practice beyond Institutional Review Board requirements. She is also an advocate for mental health system reform that rethinks current one-size-fits-all, individual-level models of care.
