Dr. Phillip Riddick, LCSW is an Assistant Professor with Norfolk State University’s Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work and the owner of Building Lives in Unison, Inc. He identifies as a true pracademic at heart as he continues to practice, teach, and serve in Norfolk, VA: the community in which he was born and raised.
After serving in the United States Marines Corps, Dr. Riddick graduated with both Bachelor and Master of Social Work degrees from Norfolk State University, obtained licensure as a Clinical Social Worker, and completed a Doctor of Social Work degree from Barry University in Miami, FL. His upbringing and military experiences gave him a special affinity for working with those who have experienced traumatic life experiences. To that end, Dr. Riddick has completed various trainings specific to helping people overcome trauma to include Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Brainspotting, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These trainings are the foundation of the clinical work he provides.
As an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Norfolk State University, Dr. Riddick’s research interests include exploring the impact of trauma informed interventions with different populations, family preservation through co-parenting, men’s mental and emotional health, and all things related to destigmatizing mental health. Dr. Riddick’s commitment to service, both in his professional and personal lives, underscores his passion for promoting a healthier, more connected community.
