Arts-based pedagogy (ABP) in social work provides a means for students to connect more deeply with material by providing differentiated learning experiences and opportunities for structured reflection and discussion (Caroll, 2018). This presentation details the use of graphic novels to teach about social justice issues and interlocking forms of oppression.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
1. Understand how to incorporate graphic novels into the social work classroom to teach social justice issues.
2. Describe the strengths and challenges of using arts-based pedagogical approaches, such a graphic novels, in the social work classroom.
3. Identify how using arts-based pedagogy can promote sociopolitical and emotional learning in students.
