Curt Garrett (he/him) is a Disaster Preparedness Coordinator at Atlantis Community, Inc., for one year. Before his employment, he worked for Denver Parks & Recreation for 27 years and is a 3rd generation native Coloradan. Curt grew up in Lakewood where he went to a segregated school for students with disabilities until he was one of the first students to be “mainstreamed” in Jefferson County. He graduated from Green Mountain High School and spent a couple of years at Mesa College in Grand Junction. In 1988, he graduated from Metro State University with a BA in Recreation Administration. His interests include listening to multiple genres of music, spending time with his wife Cherlyn, and attending car shows. He stays active by doing things like working in his yard, traveling, and attending concerts and sporting events. His favorite team is the Denver Broncos. He became involved with disaster planning while being the chairperson for the Denver Commission for People with Disabilities. He attended FEMA’s “Get Real Conference” in 2011 where he heard the tragic stories of how lack of planning forced people with disabilities out of their communities, separated them from families, and even led to death in some cases. It is his goal not to let this happen here in Colorado. Recovery from a disaster tomorrow depends on our preparation today. “It is my goal for our Atlantis community to do our planning together today to be prepared for what may happen tomorrow.”
