Maria Elena Figueroa is a graduate student currently enrolled at the City University of New York, Lehman College Department of Social Work.
She has an extensive professional background working with federal offenders, primarily with a focus on preparing inmates for successful reentry upon release from custody. She has worked briefly in the areas of substance abuse, child welfare, continuing education, and is currently working with developmentally disabled individuals. Maria Elena is expanding her knowledge and social work practice by serving as a social work intern for seniors as part of her practicum requirement for academic year 2025-2026. She worked with adolescents and families in crisis last year. Maria Elena has made a life long commitment to serving vulnerable populations as a volunteer or employment capacities. It is her hope to do so in a more impactful way by empowering underserved populations with the development of knowledge and skills learned as an emerging social worker.
