Stephen Silva-Brave, LMSW is a Sicangu Lakota scholar, social worker, and advocate committed to advancing equity in health and education. He is currently a PhD student in Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington and a CSWE Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Fellow, where his scholarship focuses on Indiginizing social work, Indigenous men’s mental health, and culturally grounded interventions.
Stephen serves on the Advisory Committee of the Global Liver Institute, where he draws from his lived experience with liver disease and substance use recovery to inform national policy and patient-centered advocacy. His role reflects his commitment to interprofessional collaboration, bridging the fields of health, policy, and social work education to improve outcomes for historically marginalized communities.
Within the Native community, Stephen is active with MMIW TX Rematriate and has developed culturally based healing gatherings such as Uncle Time. His work integrates academic rigor with grassroots advocacy, centering Indigenous knowledge and relational accountability to repower communities and build sustainable solutions for the future of social work.
