Nidia Hernández, PhD, LCSW, MSW, MPA, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at California State University, Northridge. She is a Xicana of Indigenous descent (Purépecha/Mexica) and was born in Los Ángeles and raised in Mexico City and the San Fernando Valley. She has over 13 years of experience as a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker in community-based clinical mental health, serving diverse marginalized communities. She has over 20 years of experience serving diverse communities in non-profit and public-sector settings.
Nidia received her bachelor’s degree in Chicana/o Studies from California State University, Northridge, a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from California State University, Los Angeles, a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. She earned her doctorate in Social Work from Arizona State University. Her research focuses on supporting culturally affirming and linguistically inclusive mental health interventions for marginalized communities, Bienestar de Comunidades Indígenas, holistic interventions for substance use, community organization,
transformative justice, decolonizing methodologies and interventions, and immigration policy.
