Gerard is a Lecturer in Social Work and Program Coordinator for the Master of Social Work (Research) in the School of Law and Society at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. His teaching focuses development of professional practice skills, supporting students in their transition from classroom-based learning to professional social work practice. He was previously the Field Education Coordinator for Social Work and Human Services and is the current chair of the Queensland Field Education Network for Social Work. His professional experience includes work in mental health, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, youth justice and homelessness. Gerard completed his PhD on utilizing simulation-based learning in social work education and has continued to build his research agenda in this area. He is the current chair of the Australasia Board of the Social Work Education Journal and a member of the Australian Association Social Workers (AASW) National Research Committee. Gerard was awarded AASW Social Work Researcher of the Year in 2023.
