Dr. Mary Lehman Held is an Associate Professor and the interim PhD Program Director at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Social Work. Dr. Held’s research centers on promoting positive mental health among Latino and immigrant communities. Informed by clinical practice experience in the U.S. and work with youth in Central America, she designs quantitative and qualitative studies to investigate immigration-related experiences of trauma, resilience, and integration, as well as mental health service utilization. She has specifically examined stress among Latino/a and other immigrant communities related to exclusionary immigration policies in the U.S. and how that stress correlates with depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Toward improved well-being, Dr. Held is invested in strengthening culturally responsive behavioral health service provision for Latino/a families.
