Dr. Kim S. Downing is the Director of the Bachelor of Social Work program at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in the Department of Health and Human Studies. Dr. Downing earned a PhD in Social Work from Norfolk State University in 2007 and received a Graduate Certificate in Leadership Development from The George Washington University in 2009. In November 2012, she graduated from the prestigious Bridges Academic Leadership Program for women in higher education in the UNC System. Dr. Downing is the recipient of the 2024 University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching representing ECSU.
Dr. Downing has 36 years of experience as a social worker, was licensed in Virginia as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in 2000 and joined the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW) in 1988. She has several publications and presented at professional conferences. She has served the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in several capacities. Most recently, in 2020 was appointment and 2023 reappointed to the Board of Accreditation (BOA).
In addition, Dr. Downing has served on local and state boards and volunteer with several organizations in the local community. Her research interest includes self-care, rural social work practice, poverty, and women's issues with a focus on A. A. women.
