Silvia Gutierrez is a Mexican American social work student working within the New York education system. As a first-generation immigrant, she is deeply committed to disability justice and immigrant rights. Her lived experiences shape her dedication to supporting Black and Brown communities as they navigate systemic barriers in education and mental health.
Silvia is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work at CUNY Lehman College. She strives to ensure that immigrant families—particularly those with disabilities—have access to essential resources, accommodations, and advocacy. In her work, she helps bridge the gap between schools and families by providing guidance on education, special education, and mental health services, while also serving as an interpreter to improve accessibility.
Silvia is well-versed in IEP navigation, trauma-informed care, and family engagement. Fluent in English and Spanish, Silvia has also received specialized training in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and school violence intervention. She aspires to expand her impact through policy advocacy and direct social work practice, working to build culturally responsive, equitable support systems for marginalized communities.
