Morgan State University
Miguel Rodriguez, LMSW, MPhil, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Morgan State University, School of Social Work MSW Department. Miguel is also a
Faculty Affiliate at The Reserach Center for Urban Violence and Crime Reduction. Miguel integrates lived experience and professional expertise to challenge systemic barriers while uplifting resilience and collective care. His early career as a youth organizer and Restorative Justice Coordinator in New York City schools shaped his commitment to centering belonging, repair, and liberation for Black and Brown students.
Miguel earned his PhD in Social Welfare from the CUNY Graduate Center. His dissertation examined how all three tiers of restorative justice shape students’ sense of belonging across New York City transfer and traditional high schools. The study emphasized the experiences of Black students while also illuminating broader questions about equity and school climate. This work anchors his wider research agenda on the school-to-prison pipeline, restorative and transformative justice, education reform, mental health, and liberation-based healing.
As an educator, Miguel has taught graduate-level courses in Social Work Research Methods, Human Behavior, Policy Analysis, and Clinical Diagnostics. His teaching philosophy draws from community organizing, spoken word, and participatory action research, encouraging students to engage critically while bringing their full selves into the classroom. He integrates antiracism and intersectionality as guiding frameworks, pushing students to interrogate power, privilege, and oppression in both theory and practice.
