Dr. Krystal Finch is an Assistant Professor at Southern Connecticut State University, in the Department of Social Work. Dr. Finch is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has practiced for more than 17 years in the areas of substance use and addiction, adolescent mental health, children, and family interventions.
In her role as an educator, Dr. Finch strives to teach students to push beyond adversities while developing skills to address societal, community, and systemic barriers. As a clinician, Dr. Finch serves with a compassionate and empowerment-based approach to care. As a leader, she models an approach that focuses on representation and a commitment to diversity.
In the last year, Dr. Finch has presented both nationally and locally, addressing Not So Safe Spaces: Confronting Academic Trauma Experienced by Women in Social Work Education, Racial Disparities as a Black Faculty Teaching Substance Use & Addictions Courses, and Engaging in Conversations addressing Culturally Competent Practice with Caribbean Clients. Dr. Finch has led and supported grants through the Council on Social Work Education, Substance Use Disorders Scholars Program, and the Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), New Haven Police Department.
Her dedication to learning, and professional, and personal experiences have inspired students, faculty, and colleagues throughout the field. Dr. Finch is a reflective educator who relies upon perseverance and grit to navigate academia as a black woman, first-generation educator, and scholar. She truly is an advocate for social change.
