Chair, Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education
University of Nebraska at Omaha
Peter Szto was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in 2022 at the National University of Singapore (NUS). At NUS, he taught a course on mental health care and conducted a visual study of Singapore’s “hidden youth.” The study made visible youth who pathologically self-isolate for years-on-end in their rooms. His study is significant in exploring an understudied yet emerging vulnerable population. He remains active with the Fulbright Scholars Program as a country specific advisor for the Pre-Departure Orientation sessions. Since 2019 he has served as Chair of the Advisory Board for the CSWE Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education. The Board developed its first strategic plan during this time. Dr. Szto’s research is focused on visualizing social welfare. This involves the use of photography as a tool of social research to gather visual evidence on the social world, domestically and globally. He has published in this area and has also exhibited visual studies on China’s mass internal migration and mental health stigma. His current project is a visual metaphor on cows of colour and race relations. Szto is also Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal, Social Work and Christianity. His academic home is at the Grace Abbott School of Social Work, University of Nebraska at Omaha. His earned degrees are from Calvin College, Michigan State University, Westminster Theological Seminary, and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Szto grew-up in New York City and lives with his wife in Omaha.
