Dr. Steven Hoffman is an Associate Professor in the Brigham Young University School of Social Work. Prior to joining the faculty at BYU he worked as an Institute for Education Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and as an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Dr. Hoffman’s research looks at health disparities among underserved youth. He has studied health literacy, mental health literacy, suicidal ideation, religiosity, mental wellbeing, and health-related quality of life among youth from various parts of Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States. His current projects are looking at health literacy among young adults formerly in US foster care, health literacy among parents and youth in Mexico, and the mental health literacy of college sports coaches.
Prior to beginning his academic career, Dr. Hoffman held various positions as a social worker and community volunteer. He worked with youth as a psychosocial rehabilitation specialist, facilitated parenting groups for high-conflict divorced fathers, and was a forensic social work consultant for his father’s law firm. He has volunteered with Hospice of Eastern Idaho, The Family Crisis Center, Boy Scouts of America, and has served for ~30 years in various capacities within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Hoffman and his wife Heather have been married for 20 years and have eight children.
