James Herbert Williams is the Arizona Centennial Professor of Social Welfare at Arizona State University, served as Director of the School of Social Work (SSW). He is the Director of the Center for Child Well-Being (CCWB), and Principal Investigator, Community Engagement and Dissemination Core , NIMHD Specialized Center of Excellence in the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC). His research and publications focus on K-12 academic performance, health disparities, youth violence, delinquency prevention, adolescent substance use, race and gender differences, intimate partner violence, human security, and mental health service needs and utilization patterns in urban schools.
Prior to joining ASU, Dr. Williams served as professor, dean, Distinguished Emil M. Sunley Endowed Chair, and Milton Morris Endowed Chair at the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work. He previously served at ASU as Foundation Professor of Youth and Diversity in the School of Social Work.
His funded research has included grants from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development; National Institute of Mental Health; Danforth Foundation; National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease; National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Office of Minority Health, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, U. S. Departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services.
