Alex is an Adjunct Instructor in U.S. History at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He holds a Ph.D. and two Master's degrees in U.S. history, as well as an undergraduate degree in secondary education/social studies. His research and teaching explore topics at the intersection of race, immigration, citizenship, and public policy (especially education, housing, employment, and public welfare), and his research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals, popular and scholarly digital media, and elsewhere. He has taught in high school, public and private universities, and juvenile and adult correctional facilities. Alongside the early years of his academic career, Alex served as a Machine Gunner with the United States Marine Corps Reserve until his Honorable Discharge in 2017.
