Alison Smith Mitchell, PhD, LICSW is an Assistant Professor in Social Work at Plymouth State University, and recipient of the 2023-24 Transformative Teaching Award. She earned her PhD in clinical social work from the Smith College School for Social Work and completed an MSW at the University of Maine School of Social Work. Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses on two tracks: promoting best practices supporting rural opioid-affected individuals and families; and Social Work pedagogy inquiry, specifically related to anti-oppressive teaching practices and examining the role(s) of AI in Social Work practice. Dr. Mitchell served as an Early Career Reviewer for the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research (2021-23). She is a board member for the NASW-NH chapter, and a member of the chapter’s Continuing Education Review Committee. She was a Court Appointed Special Advocates for children (CASA) volunteer guardian ad litem for children in protection cases in Maine for over a decade. Dr. Mitchell is an independently licensed clinical social worker in New Hampshire and Maine.
