Childbirth can create intense interoceptive memories, impacting maternal mental health. This study analyzed 1,102 birth narratives from r/babybumps using TSBE. Six key themes emerged: informed consent, provider communication, control, respect for autonomy, postpartum follow-up, and support systems. Findings highlight the need for trauma-informed care, shared decision-making, and improved postpartum support.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
Identify Key Attributes of Trauma-Informed Birth Environments – Participants will recognize the most salient positive and negative aspects of trauma-informed care in birth settings, as reported in women's birth narratives.
Analyze the Impact of Trauma-Informed Care on Maternal Mental Health – Participants will understand how provider communication, decision-making, autonomy, and support systems influence postpartum well-being and maternal mental health.
Apply Trauma-Informed Principles to Perinatal Care – Participants will explore strategies for improving clinical practice, including shared decision-making models, staff training in trauma-informed care, and postpartum trauma debriefing sessions.
