New Mexico’s New Medical Aid in Dying Law and Considerations for Clients with Disabilities

This presentation will describe and explore: 1) Details of the new medical aid in dying (MAID) law in New Mexico, including all necessary steps, qualifications, and protections, and 2) prospective roles for social workers in practice and advocacy, and 3) consideration of issues related to social justice and vulnerable populations.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the components of Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) laws in the U.S.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe prospective roles for social workers, in supporting patients who utilize MAID.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to consider potential issues related to social justice and vulnerable populations seeking to utilize MAID.
