This session provides attendees an overview of social work practice with parents with disabilities, including an introduction to historic and modern injustices, core concepts such as the “presumption of unfitness bias”, and evidence-based interventions. Attendees will be provided user-friendly, conceptually sound, evidence-based materials that can be incorporated into the curriculum.

Upon completing, the participant will be able to define the core concepts: the presumption of unfitness bias, parental supports, the pitfalls of relying on risk factors, and the good enough parenting standard.
Upon completion, the participants will be able to describe how the legacy of the eugenics movement effects parents with disabilities current interactions with social workers, child protection workers, and others.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to discuss how they would incorporate a module related to parents with disabilities into an HBSE or social work practice class.
