This is the first TANF leaver study that measured participants' levels of household debt. Findings suggest over half the sample was debt stressed. Implications suggest debt should become another measure of material hardship in economic well-being studies.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
describe the types and amounts of household debt held by families who had exited the cash assistance program TANF
be curious and question whether the government's policy around cash assistance has exacerbated poverty by increasing low income family's levels of debt
be curious and question whether household debt should become another measure of material hardship in scholarly research with low income families
