Understanding Adultism: A Scoping Review

Adultism is defined as the social bias towards adults and adult perspectives based on the assumption that adults are superior and therefore entitled to act upon young people without agreement or recognition of their autonomy. This scoping review identifies the ways adultism is operationalized and conceptualized in the literature.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Upon completion, participants will understand the key aspects of adultism as a concept and a prevailing social practice;
  2. Upon completion, participants will demonstrate what the literature, including peer-reviewed and alternative sources, says about adultism conceptually as well as in research and practice, including implications;
  3. Upon completion, participants will be familiar with recommendations and identified praxis rooted in allyship, power-sharing, and the promotion of self- and collective efficacy with young people.
