The aim of this study is to describe social work students’ perceptions of systemic racism, its effect on the mental health of Black people and its relevance for social work education at two universities: Appalachian State University in the United States and University of Johannesburg in South Africa.

Upon completion, the participants will be able to understand the relationship between systemic racism and mental health within the Black community.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to critically examine social policies and institutional practices that perpetuate systemic racism and explore strategies to advocate for anti-racist reforms within their own professional practice and institutions.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to critically analyze their own social work curricula, compare them with the presented frameworks, and identify gaps or areas for enhancement to better align with best practices and emerging trends in the field.
