Session: Curriculum Innovations for Inclusive Learning

Decolonizing and experiential pedagogies for inclusive learning environments for people with differing abilities

Three professors teaching a Social Work Diversity course address strategies used to support students and faculty in classrooms with experiential methods for decolonial learning environments. Together they explore lived experiences that facilitate understanding of the dynamics of differing abilities and impact teaching using disability justice-oriented pedagogies and liberatory praxis models.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Critically examine accessibility disparities in social work education (for students and teachers) and illustrate strategies used to create transformative and disability justice-oriented classrooms in alignment with 2022 CSWE EPAS.
  2. Explore challenges faced by students and teachers with differing abilities in the learning environment.
  3. Discuss experiential strategies to support students and faculty with differing abilities and build a framework of “classroom as community.”
