U.S. women receiving welfare face high risk of depression. Nearly one in three experience clinical depression, as revealed by a meta-analysis of 50 studies with 225,010 participants. Findings emphasize the urgent need for welfare programs to address maternal depression as it affects child-rearing, employment, and disability outcomes.
