Using a case study of a neurodivergent teen with autism, trauma, and dissociative video gaming, this session explores the Appraisal-by-Content (ABC) Theory. This neurocognitive model maps the PFC integration of sensory cues, bodily signals, and social feedback. It demonstrates an individualized assessment tool and treatment plan that empowers resilience.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
1. Participants will learn about the functions of the eight regions of the prefrontal cortex and learn how hypo- or hyper-activation in the regions may produce imbalances.
2. Participants will learn to integrate the Appraisal by Content (ABC) framework with evidence-based modalities (CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness, and polyvagal-informed techniques) to enhance executive functioning, emotional regulation, and social engagement in neurodivergent youth.
3. Participants will gain insights into how targeting specific PFC functions through personalized, brain-based interventions can foster resilience and adaptive coping strategies, thereby improving outcomes for adolescents who have experienced trauma.
