Exploring the Intersection Between Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Aging, and Family Caregiving

Many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) rely on family caregivers, including siblings. However, siblings face challenges balancing multigenerational, compound caregiving. Despite their critical role, they are often overlooked. This paper highlights the need for better support, policy changes, and social work interventions to assist sibling caregivers.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. identify the crucial role of sibling caregiving for people with intellectual and developmental disability, especially as parent caregivers age.
  2. discuss the multigenerational caregiving responsibilities of sibling caregivers to gain an understanding of the burdens experienced and their impacts on siblings throughout the lifecycle.
  3. explore how social workers can intervene at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels to support sibling caregivers effectively.
